Dental plaque is a sticky biofilm composed of bacteria, salivary proteins, and food debris that adheres tightly to the tooth surface.
Studies show that daily brushing removes only about 60%–70% of plaque from tooth surfaces; the remaining 30%–40% persists in the interdental spaces—areas highly susceptible to cavities and periodontal disease.
A toothbrush alone cannot effectively remove plaque from these spaces. While dental floss can reach between teeth, its cleaning efficiency is limited for individuals with wide gaps or receding gums.

The core mechanism behind using an interdental brush for plaque removal is mechanical friction.
As the bristles pass through the narrow interdental space, they expand elastically to fit snugly against the adjacent tooth surfaces. Through a back-and-forth motion, the bristles exert physical friction on the plaque biofilm adhering to the teeth, directly disrupting the biofilm's three-dimensional matrix structure and scraping it off the tooth surface.
When the brush head is withdrawn, the loosened plaque and food debris are carried out of the interdental space along with the bristles, thereby achieving a cleaning effect.
